Top 5 UNESCO World Heritage places to be

Do you know which five top UNESCO destinations Belgian students dream of? We didn't either, so we asked them! And we want to share these destinations with you to let you dream too... and perhaps even motivate you to go out there?

The Fjords in Norway:

With its marvellous scenery that makes the country beautiful and famous, the fjord landscape is ideal for all kinds of outdoor activities, whether you just want to breathe in the peace and quiet or prefer an adrenaline rush by going skiing with a view of the fjords in the Norwegian Alps, or hiking trails that offer breath-taking views! Some of these hikes will challenge you... but offer you a sensational view.

Machu Picchu:

One of the 7 wonders of the world, this Inca city in a mountainous jungle setting in Peru at 30 km from Cuzco, is one of the most extraordinary examples of landscape architecture in the world. Located near the top of a mountain in the middle of a tropical forest, it is considered as the tourist attraction by excellence in Peru.

The Grand Canyon:

Some people see it as "the mark of God". Grandiose and spectacular, the Grand Canyon - a key step in your discovery of the American West with its unique and breath-taking scenery - is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see. This sumptuous UNESCO World Heritage Site has two entrances (South and North), each separated by 350 km, so which one to choose? For a first visit, the south bank is recommended without hesitation!

It is clearly one of the most impressive parks in the state of Arizona, or even in the USA. You just have to read some figures to realize it:

  • a 450 kilometres long canyon
  • a width ranging between 5 and 30 kilometres
  • a depth of 1300 meters

That’s right! No chance of getting bored!

The Great Barrier Reef:

If you have ever dreamed of snorkelling or diving in the land of the kangaroo, it is at the Great Barrier Reef, stretching over 2600 km on the East Coast of Australia that you will realize your dream! On the menu: fish of all colours, 900 islands (yes, 900!) and crystal-clear waters!

But 2600 km is huge! Where do you start? Two possible starting points: Cairns or Airlie beach. This unique marine reservation is not just pleasing to the eye, it's also a gigantic playground for the amateurs of strong sensations.

What would a trip to the Greek capital be without a visit to its most famous monument, the Acropolis of Athens? "Acro" for high and "Polis" for city, this rock on which many historical monuments of the Greek Antiquity are bristling, including the Parthenon, is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world. The Acropolis is based in the middle of the city of Athens and can easily be reached from most areas by bus, metro, car or even on foot for the most courageous! The monument has two entrances: North and South. Tip: use the South entrance, which is much less touristy than the North entrance.
